More than 200 people killed by flash floods and landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo

We are deeply concerned about the recent flash floods in the village of Nyamukubi, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Flash floods can occur without warning, leaving little time to evacuate or prepare. They are often caused by heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt, and can cause widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. In the case of Nyamukubi, the flooding has caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and homes, leaving many families without shelter or access to basic services.

It is important to remember that while we cannot always prevent natural disasters, we can take steps to prepare and mitigate their impact. Here are some tips to help you stay safe in the event of a flash flood:

  1. Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and listen to local news and emergency services for updates on flood warnings and evacuation orders.

  2. Evacuate if advised: If authorities recommend evacuation, do so as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last minute, as flooding can occur quickly and without warning.

  3. Seek higher ground: If you cannot evacuate, seek higher ground and avoid areas prone to flooding such as riverbanks, low-lying areas, and underpasses.

  4. Do not drive through flooded areas: Avoid driving through flooded areas, as even a small amount of water can sweep away vehicles and people. If you are caught in a flood while driving, abandon your vehicle and seek higher ground.

  5. Be prepared: Have an emergency kit ready with essentials such as food, water, and medication. Keep important documents in a waterproof container and have a plan in place for communication with loved ones.
